Join Intrepid Fly and our renowned guide Fred Steynberg for the opportunity to experience the alluring enchantment of the desert shores in a quest to capture the giant Nile perch, Africa’s biggest fresh water sport fish. The fishery is Africa’s biggest water mass - the Aswan Dam - Egypt. Here you will have the opportunity to cruise the shores of Lake Nasser by boat or on foot. The emphasis will be targeting Nile perch and tigerfish on fly, as well as other species like, moonfish, tilapia and catfish.

Intrepid Fly will also include a cultural experience with the group. During the 6 – 8 hour layover in Cairo there will be time to visit the majestical Pyramids, a splendid and unexpected added attraction for our clients enjoyment. Intrepid Fly will then fly to Aswan where we will overnight at the four star hotel. The following morning Intrepid Fly will transfer to the dam and start fishing later that morning. Intrepid Fly will spend the following five days fishing Lake Nasser.

The Fishery

The Aswan dam lies about 200 km south of Cairo and controls the flood waters of the famous Nile River. The dam wall is 110 meters high and 3.2 km long, and pushes back a massive expanse of water 480 km from the dam wall into neighboring Sudan. The dam’s water is used mainly to irrigate millions of hectares of cultivated land but is fast becoming a tourist attraction in many ways.

Nile perch, tigerfish and catfish are in an enormous abundance in these waters and are caught from boat and shore. The giant perch species can grow to over 200 lbs and fish between 100 – 150 lbs are caught regularly. During prime season, May – September, anglers can expect to catch a daily quota of 5 – 6 good sized Nile perch of between 20 – 50 lbs plus on fly. Lures normally produce better results because of the treble hook versus the single fly hooks. Large quantities of tigerfish in all sizes occur. Anglers can expect to catch an average of 5 – 10 tigers per day – brilliant fishing!

Intrepid Fly uses a local guide operation based on Lake Nasser. These guides are the first original guides on the lake, thus giving the clients first hand experience with the local people and their knowledge of the area, environment and waters.

Accommodation

The group will be accommodated on a 16 meter double-deck boat with 4 double cabins on the lower deck, and a warm shower and 2 toilets. There is a comfortably furnished upper deck with lounge and large dining area. Each of the 4 cabins have two comfortable single beds, a fan, luggage storage area and a good lighting system with a 220V plug.

Egyptian food is served daily. Fresh vegetables, fruit and catches of the day are prepared into delightfully exciting dishes. Emphasis is placed on quality and hygiene. The chefs are experts in preparing Nile perch and conjuring up amazing dishes in the middle of nowhere.

The live-a-board follows the ski boats from the town of Aswan southwards to the dam and is moored at a pre selected area. These steel tenders are especially designed for Lake Nasser providing for the fly fisherman. Each day a new area is fished. Only two anglers will accompany each ski boat, maximizing each fisherman’s experience.

Season

The 2 best fishing times on Lake Nasser are from October till end of February and from beginning of April till July. Intrepid Fly will be focusing on the June and July months for these particular expeditions. In summer months, the weather is very hot in the middle of the day. During these 2 months, temperature can reach 45°C (113°F) so come well prepared with plenty of sun protection
